The white shirt most definitely makes it in to the wardrobe essential category.
White shirts are versatile wardrobe basics that serve as a foundation piece. They essentially hold an outfit together. They make a great blank canvas for accessories (necklaces, scarves, cuffs etc) and also make great layering pieces.
Every woman needs a white shirt (or three) in their wardrobe.
- button down white shirt
- tank top
I regularly replace my white tank tops and t-shirts so I don’t spend a lot on them, but I invest in quality button down shirts. Button down shirts need to fit you perfectly. If they don’t get them altered by a tailor. I promise you it will be the best money you have ever spent.
The Button Down White Shirt
The button down shirt will serve you well for work, casual and evening. If you only own one white shirt – make it a button down and invest in a quality piece.
For work you can pair it with almost anything – tucked in to a patterned full skirt with ballet flats and a pearl necklace; with a black pencil skirt, belted at the waist for a sharp and chic look; or tucked into wide-leg pants paired with heels for an effortlessly sophisticated look. For casual looks – roll up the sleeves and pair it with denim or a pair of white slacks/shorts or skirt; or wear it unbuttoned as a light jacket. For evening it can be worn with a dress pair of slacks, a beaded skirt, etc. Layer it with jackets, jumpers and vests – it really is that versatile!

The White Tank Top
The white tank top will serve you well as a casual top with jeans, shorts, skirts or as a layering piece to go under a t-shirt or sweater in a contrasting colour. For that reason I suggest you choose a tank top with a longer hemline.
The White T-Shirt
Similarly the T-Shirt will be great with jeans, skirts and shorts, under jackets and for layering over singlets. Make sure you have at least one in your wardrobe that doesn’t have a pattern on it. To choose the best shape for your body – consult the Body Shape Guide.
