You need to develop a social media strategy if you’re serious about marketing your business on social media. Effective social media marketing is a valuable tool to have in your toolbox, particularly if you are an online entrepreneur or blogger.
Your audience is already hanging out on social media, so by learning how to effectively use social media marketing you can connect with a ready made target market.
Your marketing strategy doesn’t need to be complex – it just needs to capture a few key things.
Social Media Platform Selection
The first thing you need to do, if you haven’t already, is identify which social media platforms you’re going to use. I say that because there are so many that it’s impossible to effectively maintain all of them. Unless you have a team of social media minions…..if you do go right ahead and rock all of them!
But for most of us, there isn’t enough time in the day to engage on every single platform. Spreading your effort across too many, will make you seem absent and disengaged. Something that your community will sniff out and unfollow……..
Identify The Best Social Media Content for Your Platforms
Once you’ve chosen your platforms, you need to decide what to share on them. Now, I know you’re thinking that you will clearly be sharing links to your blog posts or your products but can I be brutally honest when I say that’s not enough. And if you’ve chosen a platform like snapchat or instagram it’s really not going to work for you at all.
If you’re good at taking photos then focus on making visual content. If you’re a writer then focus on posting engaging paragraphs (with questions if appropriate) on a medium like Facebook.
Research the apps and programs that will help you create engaging content. Anything that saves you time and ups the ante on your content is worth finding!!
Know Your Social Media Audience
Where does your audience hang out? How do they interact on your chosen social media platforms?
What else do they like to interact with? Spend some time stalking your competitors online and see what they post, and how often they post it. Start compiling a list of links or content that you think your audience will like (content other than your own) and save it in an excel document or clip it into evernote.
Create Your Social Media Marketing Strategy
The first thing you need to do is set some goals. Everyone has their own unique goals but if you’re looking for some inspiration, these are some common ones:
- Increase followers to ???
- Increase reach by ??%
- Increase click through traffic by ??
- Increase comment rate by ??
Thats by no means the extent of goals you could have, it’s just something to get you started.
The next thing you need to do is grab that research you did on your competitors. If their audience (which is also your audience) engages with a certain topic or type of post more, or at a particular time of day then you need to be posting that type of content or at that time of day. If you don’t have an automated social media scheduler then set calendar reminders so you don’t forget to post. You might want to set some reminders to go back and respond to comments or engage with your audience on a regular basis – currency and consistency is key in gaining social media credibility. Write down what and when you post and track your engagement.
